RETIRED RACING GREYHOUND MISSING SINCE AUGUST, 2016

VOLUNTEERS FOLLOWING UP ON DOG SIGHTING MAY 3, 2017

LATEST INFO, NEEDS AND NEXT STEPS
* A couple on the trail in the (Wisconsin DNR) Mazomanie Oak Barrens State Natural Area turned to see a dog that had been following / maybe checking them out; the dog was walking away from them by the time they looked, and would not come when called. We still have a flyer at the trailhead, and received a prompt call.
* Volunteers checked the area for several hours after the report, not finding any dog.
* We will return in a controlled fashion (limited volunteers / dogs) and also rely in refreshed/updated flyers to generate public leads. We're not asking for further help in walking the area lest we scare something of interest away.

BACKGROUND
* A fawn, 6.5yo fn retired greyhound "Sally" () escaped her home near US 12 & Wisconsin 188 (Town of Roxbury, Dane County - near Sauk City / Prairie du Sac, WI) sometime during the workday, last seen 6:30 am cdt Friday, 8/19.
* Sally is microchipped and wearing a green 1" collar with tags.
* Sally got up to a 9 or so hour head start before her disappearance was discovered, but the area was checked and flyered that evening. Authorities were notified and continuing updates are being made.
* Flyers are posted within several miles of Sally's home (including inside area businesses) and cards have been handed out to persons contacted.

USEFUL MATERIALS & INFORMATION
* Here's a with an overview of the locations and actions.
* Here's a .

We are checking the area periodically, waiting for calls or other clues and ready to respond to whatever news might come.

FRIDAY THANKS
To many who came out or checked in later or to volunteer for Saturday: Brian & Lisa, Laurel, Amanda, Sue, Dennis, James and Lauren. Initial flyering was completed by sundown in the areas shown on the map.

SATURDAY TASKS
Volunteers can come to the area (set your GPS for 7500 Privett Rd, Sauk City, WI and we or further instructions will be in the circle there) as soon as 7am cdt. Please be sure to check in with us no later than when you arrive, but texting (414-301-2599) before you head out is even better so we know you're coming and can make sure we're keeping track of who's where and sharing any news specific to the area.

Please also read before heading out.

VOLUNTEER BRIEFING

(Updated 8/27 to note that per the Sauk-Prairie Police Department, we are not to attach any flyers to city/village-owned poles or other public devices. We can place our own stakes and signs; stakes are available with the supply kit.)

Our task is to recover Sally without injury to any person, animal, or damage to any property. So please observe all of the following:

• Work safely and respect private property. Please review the map for some items requiring special attention, in particular not stopping or being out along Highway 12. High-visibility vests are available and encouraged even though we don't want anyone standing in the road.
• Remember that volunteers are not extremely likely to see Sally directly, so we need to post flyers and hand out our number so when someone else sees her, s/he knows where to call.
• Work with a buddy whenever possible, watching each other's back for traffic or other hazards.
• Wear appropriate clothing - safe footwear, bright outerwear, etc.
• Please do not bring your dog. Another greyhound might help attract Sally once she's located -- but risks of having additional dogs in the field might outweigh the benefits. Anyone with a dog along needs to take special care of it with the weather, car travel, etc.
• Having a leash and collar along never hurts (Sally's hopefully still wearing her collar)
• Please do bring any tools/supplies you have handy; particularly stapleguns and staples and clear tape.
• Make a flyer visible in your vehicle window wherever it doesn't block vision; this will help other volunteers and public recognize your connection with this project.
• Post flyers (or fix existing ones) where they are easily visible to stopped or slow-moving traffic, or pedestrians. Staple all four corners, avoiding trees and not obscuring any signs or reflective materials. Stakes and cardboard are available to get flyers in locations without posts. Protect flyers from weather with a plastic page protector placed upside-down so the opening is at the bottom.
• Do not post flyers on private property without permission. If you secure permission and post somewhere private, please let us know (gpa.wi.llf@gmail.com) so we can add it to the notification list and check off its removal later.
• DO NOT PLACE FLYERS IN OR ATTACH THEM IN ANY WAY TO A U.S. POSTAL MAILBOX.
• DO NOT TAPE FLYERS TO PAINTED SURFACES SUCH AS CITY SIGNPOSTS OR STREETLAMPS. We can brief some tricks to get flyers in these spots without doing any damage.
• Give the hotline phone number (business card-sized slips can be printed from the website) to anyone personally contacted. Please thank all persons contacted, and assure them that all flyers will be removed.
• Call the number on the flyer if you see Sally, if you see an unsafe situation, or you have anything else to report.
• If you see Sally, go ahead and secure her if she approaches. If Sally won't approach, do not chase her. Please: watch for danger, hold a perimeter, and call the hotline so we can line up a safe capture attempt. Responding volunteers may be asked to dial into a conference call to coordinate efforts if wider-area communications are needed.

There's a Kwik Trip convenience store just across the Wisconsin River in Sauk City at 110 Phillips Blvd, and several other stores, restaurants, etc. nearby.

No news overnight as of 8:30 cdt Saturday. It's raining in the area, with continued rain forecast today.

The plan for today is to:
* Make sure that flyers are visible in the area -- this includes fixing any that may have blown down or been damaged in the rain.
* Hand out our hotline number to anyone seen out in the neighborhoods
* Keep our eyes open -- we don't necessarily expect to see Sally ourselves, but it's important to know where she isn't -- such as alongside a road somewhere.

If you're in the area doing anything, please text the hotline at 414-301-2599 so we know you're there and can share any updates.

Thanks, all.

SATURDAY RECAP

Things look good for flyers -- despite occasional rain an other challenges, Brian C, James D, Lauren B, Dennis K and Lisa A were out at different times throughout the day.

We only received one contact; from Animal House Pet Supplies texting in to get a copy of the flyer for their page. So this is an example that our work is being noticed and that if Sally pops up somewhere folks will know just what to do.

As we head into 40-some hours without sign of Sally, please keep the faith -- we don't have reason to believe she's stuck anywhere and there's plenty of space for her to lie low or otherwise get by without anyone seeing her. So we plan to make sure everyone knows what to do whenever she decides to show her face. Some may remember the -- that dog stayed out of sight for awhile, then all of a sudden showed up. If you don't have time to read the whole story, maybe check out one post. Some of the great folks out in Roxbury this weekend also worked the Rusty case, and I'm sure remember how things can change quickly at any time.

SUNDAY / WEEKEND RECAP

Things have been quiet; no calls reporting sightings or other clues. But flyers have been up since Friday evening and the 48-60 hours head start Sally has is not insurmountable. We will make sure that people in the area know about her, and can easily reach us whenever she may be seen.

Thanks to even more people who came out today -- and others who checked in to see what needed to be done: Leslie & John, MiAnna & Tyler, Abby R, Derrick H, Mary W, Lisa A and Sue P. The flyers seem to be in pretty good shape and as soon as we might learn of a new place that needs particular attention, we'll put out the word and keep everyone busy.

It's way to soon to lose hope. We can be thankful that Sally's not been found quickly in a bad way near a road. She has fine weather and plenty to eat and drink.

We'll hope for a new group of folks on the move throughout the area tomorrow that will call in with some clues.

Thanks, all.

AS OF MONDAY NIGHT

Indeed another day has passed with no signs of Sally. She could be close, or possibly further out. So we'll expand the flyering out to Flyer Area #6 (please see the map).

Thank you today to Jon E, Ariana and Gillian for checking in to help.

There should be enough materials in the box (again, please see the map) to make some progress in the expanded area; just let us know as usual if you'll be out.

AS OF WEDNESDAY MORNING

No sightings or other news, but we continue to have people on the street daily (thank you, Abby R, for your work on Tuesday!), and also have folks to respond to sightings when they come.

As we enter mid-week, please again remember that we can find Sally. We're not in control of most of the circumstances, but are doing the right things and will stay focused.

AS OF THURSDAY EVENING

Still nothing. Thanks to Jamie L for her field work today. The flyers are in good shape, and we're looking at some Saturday morning expansion work. More to come on that.

A call could come any time. We can't predict what the news will be, but are doing our best to make it good.

FRIDAY EVENING

Catching up on thanks for later in the day volunteers yesterday: MiAnna W, Tyler H, Laurel L and Melissa S. The grazing deer sure looked like fawn-colored greyhounds, and even in their large numbers on the east side of highway 188 caused some double-takes.

We're officially a week into it. Sally was last seen a week ago this morning. Still no sightings or evidence of her travels/location, which simply means we need to keep doing what we're doing and put more flyers further out in case she's so far away that anyone having seen her doesn't know she's a fugitive.

We continue to hear from volunteers out working the area, and ready to join us tomorrow. We'll meet in the park and ride lot (7440 State Highway 188, Sauk City -- just north off US 12) at 9am. If you can't be there right then, that's okay -- just text or call the hotline if you're there alone and we'll come to meet you. It looks like some rain might be unavoidable prior to mid-afternoon.

Please review and bring along any useful supplies you may have.

Thanks again, all. We look forward to seeing some folks in the morning and appreciate everyone's help.

A big thank you to a bunch of people who came out for Sally today, rain and all: Abby & Chuck R, Jaime L, Justin H & Lauren BH, Brian G & Lisa A and Melissa S. We succeeded in expanding the flyer area and improving many of the existing flyers that have seen several hours of rain. We also talked with people out and about (including those coming up to us to ask about Sally -- our efforts are effective) to assure all that we're serious about finding Sally and of course cleaning up after we're done.

We're continuing to wait for calls that could come at any time -- it's likely up to Sally to show her face. Once again, we're reassured that we did not quickly find her in a bad way -- so that's something.

Whether someone who knows firsthand how scary it is to have a beloved hound on the loose, or someone who can't imagine what this is like, everyone we've talked with is dedicated to helping Sally and her adopter.

Thank you, all.

A second quiet weekend despite great efforts again. Thanks to Laurel and Melissa for working the ground yesterday. The flyers are visible well into Dane County and we'll this week focus on maintenance pending any new developments.

Every trip to the area reminds us of what we already know -- there is plenty of space for Sally where she can stay out of sight if she chooses. So we're operating on that assumption, figuring she controls the schedule here and our job is to be ready.

Please check in/out as usual by texting 414-301-2599 if you'll be out this week; we've heard from some available folks and all help is appreciated.

Tuesday night and still no news. But our thanks are just as sincere for those not giving up - particularly the folks on the streets: Mary W on Monday, Abby and Sarah R on Tuesday (later Laurel L and Laura D, too). Our daytime crews put on a lot of miles to work the area, and this is really appreciated. And even more so given less-than-immediate results.

But we'll stick with it. Flyers, checking the area and talking with people - and expanding this in case Sally has put on some distance.

Thank you to all.

I really, really hate to sound negative, but has the mining/gravel pit next door to the house been checked at all? :( :( :(
