So how do you summarize your first Greyhound experience? Zack was amazing, he was confident, but could also be stubborn. My two most favorite activities with him were when we would walk, and at the end of the day when we were winding down. With his ears laid back along his neck, he would look at me with his “liquid” brown eyes. I would get down on the floor, to pet him, talk to him, and sometimes even to sing (either low and soft or loud and boisterous) Zachareee, Zachariii, Zachara ha ha ha ha”. So I have taken the liberty to tweak the words to the song “My Way”, and have essentially re-titled it “Zack’s Way”.
And now, the end has come And so I have faced the final curtain Without my friend, I am numb I'll state his case, of which I'm certain.
He lived a life that was full From racing to walking the trail ways But more, he did much more than this And he did it his way.
Critters, he killed a few But then again, too few to mention We did what we had to do And saw it through without exemption
I planned each car ride Each step along the parkway And more, much more than this We did it his way.
Yes, there were times, I'm sure he knew I was less than patient, so he withdrew But through it all, when I was in doubt He would come to me to pet his snout We faced it all and we stood tall And did it our way.
He loved, a bone or a rawhide Yet his appetite became so confusing But now, as tears subside I find the memories oh so amusing
To think he did all that And might I say – in a shy way Oh no, oh no, not my Zack He did it in a confident way.
For what is a Retired Greyhound, what have they got? If not to give up racing, to live on our plot You could say they have it made Yet so many new things to be afraid Let the record show, He became a couch potato And to the end he did it … HIS WAY! Yes,…. hiiisss waaay.
Thank you Greyhound Pets of America, the GPA-Wisconsin chapter, our adoption coordinator Tonia Powers, and Joan Regnery (foster home).
Rest in peace Zack (aka Fast Zack) 6/24/2005-2/22/2020 Best Wisconsin Greyhound 2009-2020 “The very best place for a good dog to rest, is in the heart of their guardian.”
